Heart Awareness Month

February is Heart Awareness Month.

YWCA Health Outreach Coordinator Josephine Hall, RN shares these tips on howheart to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Start today, with small,  simple choices like these:

Celebrate with a checkup. Let your birthday be a reminder of a yearly check up with your Doctor.

Get up off the couch. Step, march or jog in place for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.

Quit smoking. Cut the number of cigarettes you smoke each day in half; then cut that number in half; cut it in half again; finally, cut down to zero.

Drop a few pounds. You can lose one to two pounds a week by cutting 500- 1,000 calories per day and increase your physical activity.

Become a salt detective. Check out the Nutrition Facts panel on packaged foods to see how much sodium (salt) they contain. For average Americans, limit your salt intake to 2,300 mg ( 1 tsp.) a day.
