Campus Crawl Report

29 Apr

campus crawlParticipants from the YWCA’s FutureVision and Support Our Students (S.O.S.) programs recently went on “Campus Crawl” trip to Greensboro.

Here is a report of that trip from Rachel Herrick, FutureVision Director:

“It was a sleepy start on Tuesday, April 14, when FutureVision students met at the YWCA of Asheville early in the morning to start their overnight field trip to Greensboro, NC.

Students who completed a series of academic journal entries to aid them in career exploration were elected to attend this two day, one night adventure.

First on our agenda was a tour of NC A&T State University and then the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Nine students attended the Campus Crawl along with five accompanying staff and volunteers.

The Campus Crawl started at NC A T, a historically black university. FutureVision students were thrilled to eat atcampus crawl group Williams Cafeteria on campus, which included an all-you-can-eat buffet line, complete with curly fries. After lunch the FutureVision group toured the campus along with another group from New Jersey. Students were informed of admission requirements, different sororities and fraternities to involve themselves in, as well as various departments and schools within this agriculture and technical university.

NC A&T UOne fraternity that introduced themselves to our group even broke out their step routine, surprising our students. Students were also engaged with the statue and story of the four A & T freshman from 1960 who heroically stood up to the racial injustice by eating at a downtown lunch counter where people of color were not allowed to do so. Every year, on February 1st, these men and their respective families visit their alma mater to speak with students about their legacy.

After our tour of the A&T campus, our group checked in at Wyndham Garden Hotel and had some time to relax beforeywca campus crawl site-seeing a major tourist attraction: The Mall. While the Mall proved to be impressive with three levels of shopping, staff and students alike were even more impressed dining at Arigato Japanese Steakhouse with the hibachi grill, where the talented chefs cooked and threw fire right in front of us. Both chefs that prepared our food even incorporated some acrobatics as they threw bowls of shrimp on top of their chef hats. Our evening at the hotel came complete with laughs, conversation, movies, video games, and card games. It may have been a late night, but it was a fun one!

on campus crawlWednesday morning the Campus Crawl continued at UNCG. Again, students learned about the history of the college along with admission requirements. UNCG began as an all women’s college, equipping them with knowledge of education, nursing, and homemaking. It was not until 1964 that the college became co-educational. The new men on campus elected to modify the mascot from Minerva, the Roman goddess of Wisdom, to the hyper-masculine Spartan. Our tour ended with yet another buffet feast! Finally, FutureVision students got the opportunity to sit in on a freshman composition class in the Mary Foust Residential College. The Mary Foust building serves as dormitories and classrooms for freshmen and sophomores, with professors living in the building as well. As a reward for their maturity, students were given complimentary t-shirts from one of the staff members of the Residential College.

At the end of it all, everyone was tuckered out, lost in their music and daydreams.”
