Americorps Volunteers Learn Salsa

8 Mar

Last week, a group of AmeriCorps volunteers got together for a salsa lesson at the YWCA. The volunteers were participating in an all day training at the United Way and they saw salsa class as a great way to rejuvenate during training.

The group learned to couple dance to basic salsa, On 1, typically known as LA Style. With their fast-paced learning ability, students were able to incorporate turns, traveling salsa steps and a lean! Not only did they experience cultural differences, but they increased their physical health. Beginning the class with a warm-up, by mid-way volunteers took their heart rate up to the pounding of drums echoing in the room. The emphasis of the class was to bring awareness to the body and movement, with combination footwork and arm variations. The group loved the class so much, they agreed to participate in future Latin dance classes.
