YWCA Advocates are companies who commit to being year-round sponsors of our organization. This is the first in a series of profiles of these companies, with video interviews by Sabrina Nizzi focusing on “Why are you a YWCA Advocate?”

Mission Health System, Inc.

Mission Health System, Inc., based in Asheville, NC, is the tertiary care regional referral center for western North Carolina’s 18 counties and surrounding states. It is the state’s sixth largest health system and in June 2010 was recognized by Thomson Reuters as being among the top 20% of health systems in the U.S. for demonstrating higher quality patient outcomes throughout the system. A not-for-profit, independent community hospital system accredited by The Joint Commission and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, Mission Health System’s member hospitals are governed by volunteer boards of directors representing the communities they serve.

The largest hospital in the system, Mission Hospital, is licensed for 730 beds on its two adjoining campuses in Asheville.  The medical staff has more than 700 physicians representing most specialties and subspecialties. There are more than 6,000 employees and nearly 700 volunteers. It is the busiest surgical hospital in N.C. and has been recognized for outstanding quality care in cardiology and cardiac surgery, the treatment of strokes, orthopedics, and endocrinology.

Mission Health System also includes Blue Ridge Regional Hospital, which serves Mitchell and Yancey Counties; McDowell Hospital, which serves McDowell County; Asheville Specialty Hospital, the region¹s long-term acute care hospital; and Mission Children’s Hospital, providing the region’s only specialty pediatric inpatient and outpatient care from two locations in Asheville; and Mission Medical Associates, which currently employs more than 120 physicians in three counties.

Mission Health System has been a sponsor of the YWCA of Asheville since 1996, and has been an Advocate since 2002.  Over the past 15 years, Mission has given $67,000 to support YW programs and events. The YWCA has also received over $180,000 in grants from the Mission Foundation to help fund our Diabetes Wellness and Diabetes Prevention programs.
