State Budget Cuts Threaten Diabetes Wellness Program

2 Jun

As a result of proposed state budget cuts, the YWCA’s highly successful Diabetes Wellness program is in grave danger of shutting down which would leave well over 100 individuals without lifesaving, wellness support. The NC House and Senate have proposed abolishing the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund which would result in the loss of $100,000 worth of grant funds that the YWCA utilizes to support people with diabetes.

Over the last five years, the YWCA Diabetes Wellness program has become known throughout the minority community as a lifesaver for hundreds of individuals. The success of the YWCA’s program has been thoroughly documented. The program has been profiled statewide as one of the most effective wellness programs addressing health disparities related to race and the management of diabetes.

Program participants are required to invest financially what they can. They are also required to commit to exercise at the YW two times week and to attend the program support group for the first six months. The results have been outstanding. Over 78% of participants have experienced better medical outcomes.

Dan, a Diabetes Wellness Program participant, came to the program on dialysis and needing a kidney transplant. After 5 months of exercising and losing weight, his doctor gave him some surprising news – he no longer qualified for the transplant list, and he no longer needed dialysis.

To continue this program, the YWCA has made substantial expense cuts and identified other sources of revenues. However, a financial gap still exists. There is an immediate need for a minimum of $25,000 by June 30 to keep the program going into next year for those already enrolled and the YWCA is turning to the community for support.
