2011 TWIN Honoree Spotlight

11 Aug

The YWCA’s Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN) event honors women who have made significant contributions to their fields, and recognizes those organizations that support such achievements. 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of TWIN. Leading up to this year’s September 15th event, we will highlight each of our 25 incredible TWIN Honorees. If you would like more information about the TWIN event, or would like to reserve a ticket, please visit www.ywcaofasheville.org.

Amanda Edwards, Literacy Council of Buncombe County

Amanda Edwards works tirelessly on behalf of individuals struggling with  illiteracy or an inability to communicate in English. She champions the basic human right of all individuals to education and literacy by leading an organization that offers an accessible, encouraging, and stable environment for students who seek help. Over the past seven years as Executive Director, Amanda has vastly increased the sustainability and capacity of the Literacy Council. Over this time, revenues have increased and the organization has expanded its mission to begin serving children in an effort to prevent future adult illiteracy. Amanda has provided diversity training to help staff better communicate with, and advocate for, minority students.  Amanda involves herself and her staff in a variety of activities to better understand their students’ lives.
