2011 TWIN Honoree Spotlight

21 Aug

The YWCA’s Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN) event honors women who have made significant contributions to their fields, and recognizes those organizations that support such achievements. 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of TWIN. Leading up to this year’s September 15th event, we will highlight each of our 25 incredible TWIN Honorees. If you would like more information about the TWIN event, or would like to reserve a ticket, please visit www.ywcaofasheville.org.

Ellen Clarke, Western Carolinians for Criminal Justice

For 29 years as co-creator and executive director of WCCJ and Women at Risk program, Ellen Clarke has been changing the lives of Western North Carolinians. Through Ellen’s leadership and vision, WCCJ has assisted thousands of women in transforming their lives from addiction, abuse and imprisonment to healing, working, parenting and freedom from imprisonment.  The program for women was so successful that the model was used to create the Men’s Program. Ellen’s impact on the field of community-based alternatives to incarceration and been revolutionary and pioneering to say the least.  In 1984 Women at Risk became the first non-residential intervention program specifically designed for female offenders in NC and is today still the only gender-specific, nationally accredited outpatient-sentencing alternative for women in the state.
