The YWCA’s Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN) event honors women who have made significant contributions to their fields, and recognizes those organizations that support such achievements. 2012 marks the 21th anniversary of TWIN. Leading up to this year’s September 20th event at Pack Place & Diana Wortham Theatre, we will highlight each of our 20 incredible TWIN Honorees. This year has been a remarkable year for Reverend Jasmine Beach-Ferrara. As Executive Director of Campaign for Southern Equality, Jasmine has fundamentally altered the way Asheville, North Carolina, and other Southern lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals see themselves and their path to full equality. Her premise is simple – that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people are fully human and thus should have equal rights.
In the most recent WE DO campaign, Beach-Ferrara led 38 couples across 8 towns and communities as they requested marriage licenses and were ultimately denied. This community action was organized and enacted purposefully after the vote on Amendment One. The emotions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered participating couples ran the gamut from sadness, anger, frustration, empowerment, acceptance and the resolve to push forward with the realization that success will not be easy.
