From Beth Maczka, YWCA Executive Director:
Julia Ray (97), Erna Earle (87), and Gussie Haliburton (91) joined me for tea last week. These ladies are all members of the YWCA Boosters, the group of African American and White retired YWCA board members, who gathered as friends to continue to support the work of the YWCA during integration and beyond.
As we toured the facility these wonderful women were clearly moved by how far the YWCA has come. And walking through the Child Care Center they knew many of our volunteer grandmothers. They especially enjoyed visiting with the babies and toddlers!
After a brief tour of our facility, we sat down for tea and shared stories.
Mrs. Ray noted the many times the Boosters gathered at Mary Parker’s home on Charlotte Street. They also shared how they took bus trips together to places like the NC Zoo.
It was wonderful to see their genuine pleasure at being together again and remembering many good times. With their help, I hope to meet with more of the Boosters and learn more of the rich history of the YWCA of Asheville.
